Mangaluru, November 9: Newly-appointed Home Minister Dr G Parameshwar visited the jail here following the recent double murder of undertrails in prison. He then collected information about the incident from the police.
Addressing a press meet later at the circuit house here he said, after assuming charge as the Home minister, this is my first visit to Mangaluru. In addition to this visit, I have come here to participate in the meeting at the Commissionerate and also the meeting with police department. I have collected more information about the double murder that took place at the district prison, he said.
Appropriate investigations would be done over the incident of double murder of undertrails in jail. Also I have directed the police officials to investigate into how the deadly weapons came into the jail. Already the ADGP(Prisons) Kamal Panth has directed to suspend concerned police for lapse of duty. Following the incident, number of staffs in the sub-jail has been increased. 25 members from the security forces have been deployed, he said.
Good facilities have been provided to the prisoners in jail. Rs 26 crores are being spent towards their food facility. Measures will be taken to change the old building. In addition, CCTV and mobile jammers will be installed, informed Parameshwar.
The people of Mangaluru lived in peace. It is not right to do moral policing. When any problems arise, it must be tried to resolve through the police. I have already directed the higher police officers to take appropriate actions on those who take law into their hands. If the police fail to control these incidents, the police officers of the concerned jurisdiction are responsible for it, he said.
Mangaluru jail is very old and was constructed during British rule. This jail lacks facilities that are present in modern jail. It has been discussed to provide good facilities in jail. Plans are on to construct new jail in Konaje and 40 acres land in Konaje has been purchased for this purpose. A proposal would be submitted during the next budget to the Finance Minister and Chief Minister requesting to grant funds for jail construction, he informed.
DK district in-charge minister B Ramanath Rai, MLA’s JR Lobo, Mohiuddin Bava, MUDA chairman Ibrahim Kodijal, former MUDA chairman Suresh Ballal, Udupi district congress president Gafoor and others were present.
