Mangaluru, July 21: A protest was staged by the building workers under the CITU in front of the DC office here on Monday, July 20th, urging the district administration for adequate supply of sand for construction purposes and also to crackdown illegal sand mining in the district.

Secretary of CITU, Sunil Kumar Bajal addressed the protesters and said, sand is the most important raw material used for construction. Although the sand extraction is banned, illegal sand mining is still going on which has resulted in the rise of sand prices. The illegally extracted sand is transported to the neighbouring states and is sold for high prices. Lack of adequate sand supply has greatly affected the construction works and the construction workers have gone jobless in the city, he said.
