Udupi; Feb 28: While speaking during ‘Vartha Bharathi’interview, on Feb 26,Wednesday newly appointed Tulu literateur M.Janaki Brahmavar said that for the woman like me, who has been engaged in writing only all these time, the new job of administration related matter has rested on my shoulder. Hope, with the co-operation of remaining members, I am confident of discharging my responsibilities efficiently, she said.
Further she said that naturally the appointment as president of Tulu Academy by the government, gives me an immense pleasure. But now I am feeling that this is a big responsibility. A lot of friends, writers, Tulu fans/lovers and elders are extending their warm wishes by contacting me. From this, it came to my awareness that there is a big expectation and responsibilities lies on me.
She also said that Tulu Academy has got magnificent legacy of 30 years. Exceptionally capable persons have done so much good works earlier. They did Tulu literature, publication of the books, cultural and folk works. Along with continuing all these works, I am inclined to make Tulu language and culture still more firm, strong, she added
Continuing her speech, she assured that she shall tries to work honestly with other members of the Academy. Presently she has not thought of implementing new ideas and friends and well wishers are giving many suggestions and advice. After thinking on all these things and discussing with concerned people, it will be decided. But for this, little time is required, she said.
She also said that one of her Tulu dramas (Koti-Chennaya) was staged in Udupi Ranga Habba and she has acted in it.Therefore she could not view the messages received on her mobile from her well wishers and friends, when she was appointed as president of Tulu Academy. Some people told that these things came in TV but she got the information on the following day morning only, she said
Jubiliation of Tulu fans:
The post of Academy president has been remained vacant for more than one year. However the appointment of the president was though delayed, the Tulu fans, lovers and Tulu writers have expressed their happiness over the appointment of able and efficient president.
Tulu fan Balakrishna informed the government to appoint dynamic and appropriate president and another Tulu writer and play writer Kathyayini Kunjibettu has whole-heartedly welcomed the appointment of Janaki as president of Tulu Academy.
She further said that Janaki is completely able person for the post, she should have got this post much earlier. She has done lot of works in Tulu language and in the field of literature. She wishes more works in the field of cultural and in the field Tulu women has to be done from her, she suggested.
Author of “Kuduruda Kedage’said that under the presidency of Janaki Brahmavar, Academy certainly will move up further and Tuluvas are expecting more assurances from her, she added.
M.Janaki Brahmavar, who born in 1950, near Kalyanpur in Moodutonse’s Moodukudru,after doing her degree in Milagres college, she did her M.A in Kannada in Mangalore University as a favorite disciple of Prof.S.V.Parameshwara Bhat.The soft-spoken Janaki Brahmavar, after serving as professor in Brahmavar S.M.S. degree college,retired,it said.
Janaki, though she entered late in writing field, then she showed the speed, maturity made every one surprised. In both Kannada and Tulu languages, stories, dramas and poems originated from her pen. Kambala (collection of Kannada lyrical compositions) ‘Tirugatada Tirulu’ (story of tour), Kuduruda Kedage, Yuga Magrnaga, Kappu Gidi, Rukku are some of her novels. Court Marshal, Koti-Chennaya, Ekalavya are some of her dramas. Kuduruda Kedage, novel has been translated to English language by Dr.Siddalinga Pattanashetty, Darvad
Janaki Brahmavar’s was awarded with Paniyadi Tulu novel prashashti, Karnataka Tulu Academy prashashti, Sandesh Prashashti and AbbakkaRani prashashti.
Tulu Academy’s first woman president:
The Karnataka Tulu literature Academy, which came into existence when M.Veerappa Moily was the state chief minister, has found 6 presidents so far. Newly appointed Janaki Brahmavar is the 7th president and first woman president. Besides she is the second from Udupi district, who assumed office of this type.
Prof.B.A.Viveka Rai,Tulu folk scholar and writer, Mangalore University was appointed as first president in 1994 and asked him to continue as president for 1995-98 for the second term. Thereafter president A.Balakrishna Polali, from Udupi district became the president for period from 1998-2001.All the presidents are from Dakshina Kannada only.
Dr.Vamana Nandavar (2001-2004), M.K.Seetharama Kulal (2005-2008) Dr.Palthady Ramakrishna Achar (2008-2011) Umanatha Kotian (2011-2013).Kotian, who resigned for the post for contesting in last Vidhana Sabha election from Moodbidri constituency. Ever since the post remained vacant.
Though there were 4-5 names for the post of president, for the final round senior Tulu Scholar Bannanje Babu Amin and Janaki Brahmavar’s names came, both from Dakshina Kannada district only. In view of giving an opportunity for woman, Janaki’s name was selected, it is understood.
