Mangalore, Feb 24: A total of 112 students from Mangalore University were conferred with doctorate degrees in its 32nd annual convocation programme held at Mangalagangothri on Feb 24, Monday.
Around 20 students in Arts, 68 in Science, eight in Commerce and 16 in Education received the degree, while 38 gold medals and 65 cash prizes at the convocation.
Participating as the chief guest Dr K Radhakrishnan, secretary of Department of Space, Government of India and chairman of Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), conferred degrees on the students.
Speaking on the occasion, he said that technology of Indian Remote Sensing Satellite System had been installed in the INSAT-3D which was the first satellite in the world to provide high spatial resolution imagery. It has continuously provided profiles of humidity and temperature over the region of Indian Ocean, including weather forecasting over the eastern coast of India which was severely hit by the cyclone Phailin.
Speaking on Indian National Satellite (INSAT) system, he said that it has established vast advancement in telecommunications, television broadcasting, radio networking, meteorology and disaster management services.
At present, there is demand for more than 200 transponders in the satellite constellation supporting communication network for strategic, government, commercial and societal use across the country, he added.
Prof T C Shivashankar Murthy, Vice-chancellor of Mangalore University presided over the convocation.
Prof P S Yadapadithaya, registrar, Prof B Narayana, registrar (evaluation), various deans and faculty members were present on the occasion.
Later, Dr Radhakrishnan inaugurated the new management block, SVP Institute of Kannada studies and mini auditorium complex in the university campus.
