Kundapur; Nov 21: In the backdrop of announcement of election for Gangolli village panchayat, the several years demands for the up- gradation to town panchayat has remained as a mere dream.
It was a decade long demands of Gangolli citizens to upgrade Gangolli panchayat to town panchayat. It was the collective opinions of the citizens that it was the need of the hour to upgrade Gangolli panchayat to town panchayat in view of providing basic infrastructures and for the further growth of the city, which is already on the path of progress.
As the Gangolli panchayat has got all the required qualifications and eligibility for the up-gradation to town panchayat, citizens were expecting at least this time their dream would have become reality. But in the back drop of state government’s lethargic and luke-warm response to the demands for the town panchayat, citizens’ demands have been remained as mirage.
Currently Gangolli panchayat has got 31 members and will be increased to 33 at the time of election and hence it will have another two more members. Responding to the demands of citizens for the up-gradation of panchayat, in view of further development of Gangolli with more than 13,000 populations, elected native representatives exerted pressure on the government in this regard.
Even for the up- gradation of the panchayat falls under the jurisdiction of Byndoor Vidhana Sabha constituencies like Gangolli, Nada, Uppunda, Byndoor and shirur, memorandum has been submitted to the government. Even minister for urban development has said that some of the village panchayat will be up-graded to town panchayats. Therefore election date for this panchayat could have been postponed to few more days. But since the government has not taken any concrete decision in this regard, election commission has announced election date for the panchayats, where due date will get expired.
On the other side it is understood that in the event of up-gradation to town panchayat, district and taluk panchayat will not get an opportunity to contest and hence it has been come to the knowledge that some aspirants with vested interest through elected representatives lobbying behind the scenes to put pressure on government to avert it. Under the circumstance, government has back tracked from the decision of up-grading Gangolli panchayat to town panchayat and therefore for Gangolli, panchayat is the only source for the time being, it said.
In Gangolli village panchayat, which falls under the jurisdiction of Byndoor vidhana sabha constituency, out of 31 members,15 people are BJP supported and 14 people are congress supported and remaining two congress supported members have been disqualified.
Smt.Sakamma and Smt Sharada Sherugar both are BJP supported, serving as president and vice president respectively. During last election time K.Laxminarayana was the MLA, whereas this election time K.Gopala Poojary is the MLA.
Overall this year’s election will be a battle of curiosity and for congress it has become a question of prestige.
