Kerala govt announces Rs. 3 lakh for Manipal rape victim

Kasargod, Jul 23: The Kerala government has decided to provide the financial support of Rs 3 lakh, under the central government’s Nirbhaya fund To the Manipal MBBS student who was kidnapped and gang-raped on month ago.

The medical student of Manipal University, a native of Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala, was kidnapped in an auto rickshaw and allegedly raped by three men on the night of June 20. The girl was admitted in hospital for treatment before going back to Kerala. Hence, the Kerala government has announced that it will be releasing Rs 3 lakh, because girl has bravely overcome the cruelty meted out to her by her persecutors and shown courage in dealing with the tragedy, said official sources.

Kerala Nirbhaya project advisor Sunitha Krishnan appealed the government to provide the fund based on her recommendation, by recognising the student’s bravery.

A week after the heinous incident, the police department successfully arrested rapists Yogish, Hariprasad and Anand on June 27. But Yogish and Anand attempted commit suicide, before their get arrested and they were admitted in the Manipal hospital. Presently, all three rapists are shifted to Shimoga jail under judicial custody, till July 29. Brothers of Yogish and Hariprasad also have been arrested for attempt of destroying evidence and lodged in Hiriadka jail.
