Kundapur, October 26: Thieves broke into Shree Rakteshwari temple in Tallur in the taluk during late night on Sunday and stole silver items, gold Mangalsutra and money from donation box. The incident came to light on Monday morning.
Shree Rakteshwari temple is a famous temple at Thallur.
On Sunday night, the thieves entered the temple by breaking open the latch of the main door. Then they broke the lock of the Garbhagudi door using a iron rod and robbed off the silver items, cash and Mangalsutra that was on the idol of goddess. In addition they also broke the lock of the Nandikeshwara gudi located close by and fled with the cash that was dropped into the kanike hundi there. When the priest came to offer prayers at the temple in the morning, this theft came to light.
No CCTV cameras:
Several thefts have been reported over a span of four –five months across Kundapur and although the police department had issued notices to all the temples to install CCTV cameras and burglar alarms, till now CCTV cameras have not be installed in this temple which shows the negligent attitude.
DySP visit:
Kundapur DySP Manjunath Shetty and SI Nassir Hussain and others have visited the temple and investigated. Finger print experts and canine squad were summoned to the spot. Prima facie, the theft does not seem to be done by habitual thieves and police suspect the hands of locals in the theft.
The iron rod used by the thieves to break open the lock, a red cloth used at the temple, sword and the donation boxes were found near a bush behind the temple and the police have taken all the items into their custody. The value of stolen items is estimated at Rs 40,000.
