Kundapur, October 19: Tension prevailed in communally sensitive Kandlur in Kundapur once again after miscreants set fire to a flag that was erected by an association on the late night on Sunday October 18th.
So far, no untoward incident has been reported. As preparation for 50th Sharadotsava celebrations, banners, flags and buntings were hung throughout Kandlur town by an association. Some miscreants with the intention of creating tension, set fire to an Om flag put up near the Kandlur Bridge. The flag is almost burnt. On learning about the incident on Monday morning, the activists of pro-Hindu associations and the program organizers visited the spot and expressed their rage.
Two days ago, a peace meet was held and the leaders from both the communities were asked to cooperate to maintain peace during the Sharadotsav celebrations. But the miscreants once again attempted to create tension by burning the flag.
On Wednesday October 14th night, a group of people of a community had assaulted two Dalit men belonging to right-wing outfits. Tight security was deployed in the spot after the incident. Arrests related to the incident were made later.
District superintendent of Police K. Annamalai had visited Kandlur and had discussed with the leaders of both the communities and had also issued warnings. But till the situation has not improved, which has created anxiousness among the locals.
The program organizers have put up over fifty banners and flags in the town as a preparation for the Sharadotsav. They allege that the flags were burnt intentionally.
Kundapur DySP and the Circle inspector have visited the spot and have asked people to maintain peace.
