Case of chopping of fingers – Prime accused nabbed from Andhra Pradesh

Belthangady, August 24: The police have finally arrested Gopalkrishna Gowda (67), accused of severing the fingers of Sunder Malekudiya, from Neriya village of the taluk.

Pertaining to the issue of land dispute on July 26th; land owner Gopalkrishna Gowda and others had assaulted Sunder Malekudiya, and severed the fingers of the latter using a weeding machine. The accused later went absconding. The injured Sunder Malekudiya is under treatment in Government Wenlock hospital in the city, it is learnt.

District superintendent of police Dr S D Sharanappa, addressing a press meet here on Sunday August 23rd, informed that Gopalkrishna Gowda, the prime accused in the case, was arrested at Anantpur in Andhra Pradesh on Saturday August 22nd.

Based on the information given by Gopalkrishna Gowda, the police also arrested car driver Vasanth Gowda. Both have been brought to the city and produced in court.

In connection to the case, the police had earlier arrested Gowda’s wife Pushpalata. His sister Damayanti, who is also an accused, is absconding.

A complaint filed by Sunder Malekudiya’s wife Revati states that, the accused barged into a land given to him by the forest department and saying the land belonged to them, sprayed chilli powder on Malekudiya’s wife and children, and chopped his fingers with a weeding machine and severely injured his hand, abused at him and also threatened him of life.

As the victim is a Dalit, the Beltangady police registered a case under Sections 447, 504, 326, 506, 307 of IPC and section 34 of Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

Four police teams were formed led by circle inspectors of Beltangady, Bantwal, Sullia and Puttur and each of the teams went to various places in the state in to nab the accused, said the SP.

The prime accused was absconding who was found in a guest house at Puttaparthi of Anantpur district in Andhra Pradesh. Later, based on the information given by Gopal Gowda during probe, Damayanti’s car driver Vasanth Gowda who had left from Anantpur towards Hassan via Bengaluru was arrested late night on Saturday at Channarayapatna. On Sunday morning, the accused were brought to Beltangady, said the SP.

We are doing our best to trace and arrest Damayanti soon. Prima facie, the case appeared to be of land dispute. Various organizations had pressurized to arrest the accused. The team which participated in investigation and the arrest operation will be rewarded, informed SP Dr SD Sharanappa.
