Mangalore, June 26: After successfully implementing STP at Kadaba and Ujire gram panchayat limits, the ZP CEO Dr K N Vijayaprakash has submitted a proposal to the government for the setting up of similar units in 100 gram panchayats under Nirmal Bharath Abhiyan programme and thus about 100 gram panchayats in Dakshina Kannada district will soon be a model in achieving sanitation standards, if the proposal of the Zilla Panchayat on setting up of liquid waste sewage treatment plant (STP) is approved by the government

After successfully implementing STP at Kadaba and Ujire gram panchayat limits, the ZP has submitted a proposal to the government for the setting up of similar units in 100 gram panchayats under Nirmal Bharath Abhiyan programme, said Zilla Panchayat CEO Dr K N Vijayaprakash to Deccan Herald.

The water will be treated using eco-friendly measures. The treated water will be fit for recycling back to the toilet flush, gardening and also for horticulture crops. Without the STP, the hotels, and complexes were pumping out waste water from kitchen and other areas openly to the drains, thus causing pollution in the vicinity. If the water is pumped to the STP plant for purification, even pollution can be checked to some extent.

Taking a cue from the success of scientific solid waste management units at Laila and Kadaba gram panchayats, the ZP has decided to set up similar units in 30 GPs, wherein organic manure can be produced using degradable waste. About 16 such scientific solid waste management units are ready in the district.

The organic manure generated at Laila is sold in the name of ‘Laila gold’ and that generated at Kadaba is sold in the name of ‘Kadaba Kadamba.’ The organic manure is produced by sprinkling organic solution to the degradable waste at the scientific solid waste management unit. All the degradable waste gets converted into manure within six weeks of sprinkling of the solution. The solution will also remove odour from the site, the CEO said. He said the sale of organic manure will help in the maintenance of the unit.

Scientific solid waste management units are ready at Subramanya in Sullia taluk, Kurnadu, Golthamajalu, Vittal, Sangabettu, and Kukkipady in Bantwal taluk, Kuvettu, Aladangadi, Thanneerupantha, Ujire and Kokkada in Belthangady taluk and Mennabettu, Kinnigoli in Mangalore taluk. These units will start functioning shortly. The work on the units at Kemral, Ganjimutt in Mangalore taluk, Bellare in Sullia, Manchi in Bantwal taluk, Uppinangady in Puttur taluk and Dharmasthala in Belthangady are in progress. The action plan for seven more GPs are ready, he said.

“We need to implement scientific solid waste management units in those gram panchayats where the quantum of waste generated is more. If such units are started in gram panchayats where quantum is less, then it would be difficult to maintain the unit,” said the CEO.

Landfill sites

Out of 203 gram panchayats in the district, landfill sites will come up in 172 gram panchayats. Action plan for 137 gram panchayats are ready. The work on 22 landfill sites have been completed and 36 are in progress. The ZP had earmarked Rs 7.93 crore for cleanliness drive in the district during the year.
