Beltangady, July 25: A gang of young North Indians were handed over to the police by the locals on Friday July 24th near Aladangady in the taluk.

These youths were trying to convince the villagers that they would polish their gold jewellery and give them a new look, were handed over by the locals to the police.

In the past, many villagers were duped by such gangs. After the gold ornaments were returned to families after they were dipped in chemicals, many people were shocked to know that their gold jewellery had decreased in their weight. By the time they realized that the gold polishers had cheated them, the cheaters normally vanished from the vicinity.

The gang of youths had visited the house of Sheshappa Nalike. By their communication, the gang was successful in earning he trust of  his wife and daughter, who were alone at home at that time at Ungilabail Aladangady on Friday.  They also convinced the household to hand over their ornaments for polishing. The jewel polishers dipped the ornaments given by them in a solution, and left to some other houses in the vicinity for business.

Meanwhile, Sheshappa’s son, who came to his house, wished to check what was going on, and removed ornaments kept in the solution. To their shock, he found that the golden chain had turned into several bits.

Immediately, he informed the neighbours and launched a search for the gang. Three youths of the gang were caught by the locals and handed over to the police.

The police are now investigating to find out how many people were duped by this gang.
