Kundapur, July 7: A case of sexual harassment has been registered on Monday July 6th, against the Gangolli village assistant working under the revenue department .
The accused is identified as Umesh Kumar (38).
A woman has complained to the Gangolli police that Umesh Kumar was sexually harassing her. The accused has been harassing women and girls who visited the revenue office, it is learnt from the details.
Last week, a woman from Gangolli had visited the village accountant’s office for some work related to ration card and caste certificate was allegedly harassed by the same person. As the village accountant was not available at that time, the accused said he would help her with the work and allegedly misbehaved and used indecent words. He also asked her to visit again later in the afternoon when nobody would be present after 3pm and showed her some obscene pictures in his cell phone. He asked her number and said threatened that he would visit her house, it is said.
Initially the woman hesitated to file complaint against the accused fearing consequences, but managed to tell her ordeal to her family and with their help and public support, she filed a complaint in Gangolli police station on Monday July 6th.
Reshma Kharvi, the gram panchayat president told the media representatives that the accused has been torturing women from a long time, but none went forward to complain as it was a matter of dignity. As his indecent mannerism has gone beyond limits, all came together united to complain.
The locals also said that the accused usually harassed widows and single women. They urged for stringent action against him.
Umesh Kumar is married, but does not live with his wife. He has two children.
Gangolli Sub-inspector B Subbanna said that it was serious issue and assured immediate actions against the accused.
About eighty people including Gram Panchayat president Reshma Kharvi, member Edward Cardin, Mujaheed, Rosy Fernandes, and other association members were present at the police station while lodging the complaint. They urged for immediate action against the accused.
