Bantwal, May 9: An accident occurred between a Maruti Alto car and a truck that was illegally transporting sand at Soorikumeru on Mangaluru- Bengaluru national highway on Friday May 8th. An old woman expired and three were seriously injured in this accident.
Saraswati (84), Srinivas (58), Ramachandra (28), and Kanchana (40), were travelling in a Maruti Alto car to Mangaluru from Shevire in Kodippady village of Puttur taluk.
The accident occurred at a road curve. In the process, the car was dragged by the sand laden truck for a distance of 50 metres and was later dumped into the drain.
The car was completely mangled after the accident. The truck dashed to the roadside protective wall, and its front wheels came off. Soon after the accident, the truck driver fled from the scene.
The locals said rash driving of the driver of the sand truck had caused the accident
Locals and passersby helped the victims. All the injured people were admitted into a private hospital. Saraswati died on the spot, while others were seriously injured. Ramachandra was said to be behind the wheels at the time of accident. He is in unconscious state, it is learnt.
Bantwal police circle inspector, Belliappa, and Vittal sub-inspector, Prakash Devadiga, visited the spot investigated. A case has been registered.
