Mangaluru May 7: The gram panchayat (GP) elections are scheduled on May 29th, during which instead of electronic voting machines (EVMs), polling boxes will be used, said the deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim.
Addressing a press meet at his office on Thursday, May 7th, the DC explained to the media that this time, 50 percent reservation are provided for women candidates. Nominations can be filed from May 11th to May 18th with the respective election officer or assistant election officer. The last day to withdraw the nominations is May 21st.
In order to conduct the election irrespective of party lines, the contestants can take the list of available symbols from election officer and mention any 3 symbols. Symbols will be allocated based on the priority. From May 10th, code of conduct will be applied.
The DC further said, elections will be held in 55 Gram panchayats of Mangaluru, 57 gram panchayats of Bantwal, 46 gram panchayaths of Belthangady, 41 gram panchayaths of Puttur and 28 gram panchayats of Sullia. In total there are 227 gram panchayaths. Total voters in Mangaluru Bantwal, Belthangady, Puttur, Sullia Gram panchayat are 31056, 270787,195895,177095, 95908 respectively. Total number voters in 5 taluks is 10,52,741. Total number of service voters who are in government service is 859.
Total number of polling booths is 1309. The numbers of polling booths in Mangaluru, Bantwal, Belthangady, Puttur, Sullia gram panchayath are 391, 341, 234, 221, 122 respectively.
227 polling booths are identified as sensitive and 204 polling booths have been considered as very sensitive. Already 229 election officers and 249 assistant election officers have been selected.
Male contestants who contest for the election have to deposit Rs 200 and female contestants have to deposit Rs 100, informed the DC.
