Kasargod, April 23: The Kasargod police have finally arrested a man who was wanted in connection to the smuggling case of a huge quantity of gold ornaments which took place twenty one years ago.
Sainuddin Mohammed (50) from Bayaru Ponnangala, Uppala, is the accused who remained elusive since the past 21 years.
In 1994, Sainuddin was arrested at Mumbai airport for smuggling in gold ornaments worth Rs 41 lakh from abroad. The smuggled gold was seized by the officials.
However, after obtaining bail from a Mumbai court, he absconded. It is learnt that he was hiding in a foreign country for eight years.
Some days ago he returned to his native to attend a relative’s marriage. Kasargod DySP Ranjith, who got the information, he along with his team arrested Sainuddin successfully.
The Mumbai cops who were searching for Sainuddin had sought the help of the Kasargod police.
Police sources said, for further investigation; Sainuddin will be handed over to the Mumbai police on Friday April 24th.
