Mangaluru, March 19: Since some time, efforts are going on to station toll gate on the National Highway near National Institute of Technology (NITK) at Suratkal, Mangaluru.
Protests were organised against the construction of toll plaza and Nagarika Vedikein Suratkal has also been putting its efforts to stop erection of this tollgate through legal means and the involvement of people’s representatives.
It is reported that, a excavator arrived at Suratkal and began to dig the ground for erecting the tollgate near NITK, duly supported by a group of people who arrived in a car, on Tuesday March 17th morning. Some office bearers of Nagarika Vedike, who learnt about the development, went to the spot and tried to stop the work which was going on.
Argument took place between the men in the car and the Vedike office bearers, and when the situation was going worse, the policemen arrived at the spot. The men who supported the tollgate work moved from the spot.
It is gathered that these people have lodged in a hotel near NITK who are in constant touch with police officials. They may try to begin the tollgate work on Thursday with the help of police, it is learnt.
Information says, the contract for the tollgate has been taken by a party from Dharwad, and the sub-contract for the work has been given to a person who belongs to the saffron brigade here.
