VIRUDHUNAGAR, November 29: A Class 8 boy was stabbed to death by a youth inside his classroom on Friday morning. The murder took place soon after the boy, Bhasakaran, 13, reached the government higher secondary school in Pandhalkudi in Virudhunagar district and entered his class around 8.45am.

He was sitting in the classroom when an 18-year-old youth, later identified as Mareeswaran by the school staff, barged in and stabbed him with a knife. The incident took place in front of other students.

Police said they are clueless about the motive for the murder and hope to nab Mareeswaran soon. The boy’s relatives staged a protest on the main road, blocking vehicular traffic.

Mareeswaran had passed out of the same school.

Mareeswaran barged into school campus in the morning, armed with a knife, and ruthlessly attacked the boy.

Bhaskaran sustained injuries on his forehead, nose and hands, apparently while trying to ward off the attacker. After attacking the boy, Mareesawaran escaped from the school.

Bhaskaran, who was bleeding profusely, was immediately taken to hospital for treatment. But, the boy died on the way. His body was sent to the mortuary for post-mortem examination.

As news of the incident spread, people in the area, along with the boy’s family members, blocked the Aruppukottai-Pandhalkudi road, demanding the arrest of the murderer. A case was registered in Pandhalkudi police station and a search was launched for the murderer.

Police said in September 2013, Bhaskaran and Mareeswaran, along with four other youths in the area, had gone missing. Two days later they were traced to Tiruchendur in Tuticorin district and brought back. But, the motive behind the murder would remain a mystery until Mareeswaran is caught, police said.
