Mangaluru, December 5: A 5th semester mechanical engineering student was mowed down to death by a moving train while he had been for a morning walk on Friday December 4th.
The deceased is identified as Chetan Chandrakant Chandavar (20). He is from Kumta in Uttara Kannada district.
Chetan Chandrakant was a student of National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), in Suratkal.
The engineering semester examinations had concluded on Thursday.
It is gathered that, Chandrakant, who was in a relaxed mood, was walking on the railway tracks towards Pavanje along with friends, Laxmish and Sahana. Meanwhile, a train had arrived from behind. Though Laxmish and Sahana, who were moving at some distance behind, shouted at Chandrakant to move away from the tracks, he could not hear them as he was wearing earphones, it is gathered.
The two immediately rushed forward to save Chetan Chandrakant from getting knocked by train, but were unsuccessful. Both of them suffered minor injuries in the incident.
Suratkal police have registered a case and investigations are underway.
