  • In Bengal, the mother-in-law gifts her daughter-in-law an iron bangle which is usually plated with gold, the moment she enters her new household. Apart from this, the newlywed women are also presented with a pair each of conch shell bangles and red coral bangles, both of which signify their marital status.
  • In Punjab, new brides are made to wear ivory bangles or Chuda teamed with red bangles. They are supposed to wear these bangles for a given period of time which may be a month or a year depending on the family custom.
  • In Rajasthan and Gujarat, the brides are presented with ivory bangles by their mothers before taking the ‘Saat Pheras’ or the seven rounds around the holy fire.
  • In the southern states, green coloured bangles are worn by the bride since green signifies fertility and prosperity. Pregnant women are gifted bangles of various colours through a ritual called Valaikaapu held in the seventh month of pregnancy.
