The politically crucial Ramnagar on Saturday saw a tearjerker of an election meeting as  former chief minister H D Kumaraswamy tried to touch the emotional chord by playing the Deve Gowda card.

Invoking the fact that his father, the former prime minister, was fighting his last election at the age of 82, Kumaraswamy tried to make it appear “inevitable” for him to contest the Lok Sabha election from Chikkaballapur seat, even if winning it meant having to vacate the Ramanagar Assembly seat which he now holds.

He said he had vowed to win at least 10 to 12 seats for the JD(S). To fulfill that promise, he has to take some difficult decisions, including contesting the elections and bequeathing his assembly seat.

Saturday’s meeting was touted as a bid to “convince” party workers to allow him to contest from Chikkaballapur.

One of the workers threatened to commit suicide, if he ditched them. At this stage, a teary-eyed Kumaraswamy reminded that he had been “betrayed” when his wife Anitha was defeated in the Assembly elections from the Channapatna seat and subsequently in the by-election to the Bangalore Rural seat.
