Geetha Shivarajkumar, wife of actor Shivarajkumar and Janata Dal (Secular) candidate from the Shimoga Lok Sabha constituency, took the party’s primary membership at a convention here on Monday.
The former Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy welcomed her to the JD(S) by offering her the party flag.
Ms. Shivarajkumar said that her father, the late S. Bangarappa, had worked hard for the welfare of the common people throughout his political career.
“I am not entering politics for my personal ambitions, but to continue the good work of my father,” she said.
Recollecting her association with her father and her father-in-law, Kannada thespian Dr. Rajkumar, Ms. Shivarajkumar said, “I had the opportunity to learn lessons of humility, compassion and concern for the common people from them. After fulfilling my responsibilities as a daughter, daughter-in-law, wife and mother, I am now foraying into politics to serve the people.”
She said that although she was new to politics, she shared a warm relationship with the people of Shimoga, her father’s home turf.
Ms. Shivarajkumar appealed to the people not to treat her as a politician. “I am new to politics. Treat me as one among you,” she said.
Sorab MLA and State president of JD(S) youth wing Madhu Bangarappa said that Ms. Shivarajkumar will file nomination papers on March 24.
The former Minister Bandeppa Kashempur was present.
