Belekeri ore theft MLA’s son arrested

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday arrested Vivek Hebbar, the son of a Congress MLA from Yellapur in Uttara Kannada district, in connection with the Belekeri port iron ore export scam. 

Another person, Prakash Hegde, a close relative of the Hebbars’ was also arrested in connection with the case.

Hebbar and Hegde were summoned to the CBI office, Ganganagar in Bangalore, and arrested when they turned up.

Vivek has been the owner of Dream Logistics, which is accused of exporting nine lakh metric tonnes of iron ore from Belekeri port between January 1, 2009 and May 31, 2010 – of which the CBI claims that three lakh metric tonnes were stolen.

The CBI special court remanded the two in the CBI custody till Friday. The CBI has already arrested four sitting MLAs in the case.

Vivek Hebbar is the son of Shivaram Hebbar.
