BANGALORE: Even as Bangalore police are pushing for the deployment of security guards at every ATM in the city, an abortive attempt was made to loot a kiosk of Indian Overseas Bank in Malleswaram early on Tuesday.
The ATM targeted on Link Road was guarded but the man on duty has gone missing. The security guard who arrived for work on morning shift noticed that the ATM machine was damaged and the night shift guard was not around. For now, the missing guard is the prime suspect.
Senior police officers said the miscreants appear to have tried to break the ATM machine using an iron rod but they were unsuccessful.
Sandeep Patil, deputy commissioner of police, north, said the miscreants had covered the CCTV camera with a newspaper because of which they have no visuals of the miscreants. “The camera only shows someone coming in around 2pm. Although the ATM had a camera outside, the footage from it is not clear,” he said.
Officers said before the theft attempt, a patrolling team had visited the ATM around midnight and found the security guard in place.
Police are investigating the antecedents of the missing guard. “He joined work only four days ago. We have formed a team to track him,” the officers said.
