BANGALORE, December 13: To meet the increasing demand for drinking water for Bangalore, the State Cabinet has given the green signal to the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) to draw an additional 10 tmcft of Cauvery water to newly developed layouts in the city.
Addressing presspersons here on Thursday, Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs T.B. Jayachandra said the Cabinet had decided to place the proposal before the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court is likely to hear the Cauvery water dispute on January 15, 2014.
Currently, the BWSSB is drawing 17.64 tmcft water from the Cauvery.
The government has decided to hold a meeting with its legal counsel Fali S. Nariman on December 16 in New Delhi to defend the State’s interests with regard to sharing of the Cauvery waters.
He said the government had been exploring various options to meet the drinking water requirements of the city. Efforts were being made to bring water from Yettinahole project, Linganamakki reservoir and two tributaries of the Cauvery river in Kodagu district.
