Bangalore, November 9:  Choked storm-water drains, garbage strewn along walkways, roads in a deplorable state, potholes hastily covered with construction debris and sewage overflowing onto the road — this is what Mayor B.S. Sathyanarayana saw during his early morning inspection of Subhashnagar ward on Friday.

He was accompanied by local MLA and Minister for Food and Civil Supplies Dinesh Gundu Rao, chairperson of BBMP’s standing committee for major works B. Somashekar, councillor T. Mallesh and officials of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).

Local residents complained about the poor condition of Ramakrishna Sevashram Road, which was dug up on both sides by Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board several months ago. Mr. Sathyanarayana directed BBMP officials to fill potholes on the road at the earliest to provide relief to motorists. Officials were also directed to prepare an estimate for asphalting the road. The work is to be executed by Karnataka Rural Infrastructure Development Ltd. Members of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Bangalore Slum Development Association apprised Mr. Sathyanarayana and Mr. Rao of the need for a railway underbridge (RUB) at Swatantrapalya and a service road along the railway track. They explained that several people were now risking their lives trying to cross the railway track.

The mayor promised to meet officials of South Western Railways soon to discuss the construction of an RUB. He offered to sanction Rs. 10 lakh from the Mayor’s grant for the initial deposit to begin work on the project.

Mr. Rao urged the BBMP to direct Mantri Developers to begin work on a link road behind Sampige Road station of Namma Metro connecting Jakkarayanakere to Swatantrapalya. The link road is expected to decongest Sampige Road.
