A class 8 student accidentally fell to her death from the porch of her second-floor residence at Subramanyanagar on Friday morning.
R Brinda, 14, the only daughter of V Sharawati and H K Raghupati Gowda, was studying at Vani Vidya Kendra, a few streets away from her house on 10th Main Road, Subramanyanagar. The family of Gowda, a grocery shop owner, moved into the duplex house on the second floor of the three-storey building owned by Venkatesh Gowda, Sharawati’s father, last November.
While the girl’s grandparents lived on the ground floor, her uncle lived on the first floor. The family is from Turuvekere in Tumkur district.
Gowda told Deccan Herald that on Friday morning, Brinda was preparing for her examination on Saturday, when she fell down from the second floor. Gowda and his wife were away and Brinda had come down to her grandmother’s house to have coffee at around 7.30 am. She was returning home to resume her study when she heard her grandmother calling someone.
Gowda said the railings on the second floor were three-and-a-half foot high and it was not possible for her to topple when she stood near them. But, near the staircase, there was a small platform that had a granite floor. He said Brinda might have stood on the platform and bent over the railings. As the platform was slippery, she probably lost her balance and fell to the ground, he added.
Her uncle said the girl was alive when they rushed her to the nearby Manipal North Hospital and from there to Mallige Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries by 10 am.
Gowda said his only daughter was good at studies. She was a trained swimmer and participated in many State-level competitions. Besides, she was a Bharatanatyam dancer.
