BANGALORE: A 25-year-old woman died after being given blood of a wrong gro up in KC General Hospital. Malleswaram resident Rajeshwari breat- hed her last in Victoria Hospital early on Thursday.

Acting on a complaint from Rajeshwari’s family, Malleswaram police booked cases against Dr Suresh, a physician, nurse Bhagyalakshmi and two other employees of the government-run KC General Hospital.

Rajeshwari’s family said she was admitted to KC General Hospital for blood transfusion on Saturday. Her blood group was O positive, but she was given B positive blood, causing grave complications, they alleged.

Rajeshwari, anaemic for four years, pointed out to her relatives that she was being given blood of a wrong group. “She saw a bottle which had B+ written on it, and raised an alarm. But the nursing staff tried to pacify her, saying the sticker was wrong and it was fine,” said Jayalakshmi, Rajeshwari’s elder sister.

Nurse Bhagyalakshmi, who was handling the blood bottles, tried to tell the family members all was well. But they would have none of it and took up the matter with hospital authorities. The patient immediately developed complications like vomiting, dysentery and diarrhea.
