Bengaluru, August 25: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has taken a lead over the ruling Congress in the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) elections with the party leading in 91 seats so far. Congress is ahead in 73, while JDS in 13 and Others in 8 seats.

The Karnataka Congress President G. Parameshwara calls BBMP polls result very disappointing. “This verdict will impact city development,” Parameshwara said. “It is not a referendum on the state government functioning. The party is not looking at a leadership change.”

Early trends showed BJP racing ahead of Congress, but with subsequent rounds the grand old party has made a steady comeback. BJP though is still leading and is likely to take control of BBMP again.

Meanwhile, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah held a meeting with five senior ministers and some senior Congress leaders to understand what went wrong.

A total of 1,121 candidates are in the fray for the 198 wards of the BBMP. The elections were held across 6,733 polling stations on August 22.
