Railway crimes dip but heinous crimes spike

15BG_crime_in_railBANGALORE, June 15;The number of criminal cases registered by the Government Railway Police marginally came down from 672 in 2011 to 649 in 2012. However, the number of heinous crimes like murder, rape and kidnap within the railway premises increased during the period.

But the overall crime rate from 2011 came down by 3.4 per cent in 2012.

The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) said 19 murders were reported during 2012 in Karnataka within the railway premises against 15 in 2011 and 14 in 2010. Two rapes were reported in 2012 whereas not a single case was reported in 2011. One was reported in 2010.

Kidnapping and abduction saw an increase, from one in 2011 to four in 2012. There has been a steep spike in robberies — from 31 in 2011 to 47 in 2012, whereas only 29 were reported in 2010. On the other hand, there had been a decline in thefts — from 520 in 2011 to 482 in 2012. There were 436 cases reported in 2010.
