Dharwad:  Karnatak University’s former vice chancellor H B Walikar was produced before the special Lokayukta court in Dharwad by the Lokayukta Police on Tuesday.

The Lokayukta Police, who had arrested Walikar on October 20 under the Prevention of Corruption Act, brought him from Bengaluru after the doctors at Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Research & Hospital discharged him on Tuesday morning.

The sleuths, soon after arresting Walikar, had taken him to the district civil hospital in Dharwad for a medical checkup, and on doctors’ advice, sent him to KIMS Hospital in Hubballi.

He was later shifted to Bengaluru for treatment of heart-related problems.

When produced before Judge H S Ballolli here on Tuesday evening, Walikar complained that the Lokayukta Police had taken him directly for medical checkup to civil hospital and then to KIMS without producing him in court.

“The police came to my office at around 5:30 pm and arrested me at 7:30 pm. I had thought they would produce me before the judge. Had they done so, I could probably have secured bail the same day. Instead, they took me to the hospital in Dharwad, Hubballi, and Bengaluru,” Walikar complained.

He said Jayadeva Hospital had charged a huge amount for his treatment and his family had to foot the bill. “The Lokayukta Police had admitted me to Jayadeva Hospital and it is their responsibility to pay the bill. They should reimburse the money spent by us on medical treatment,” he demanded.

The judge asked Walikar to abide by the conditions put by the High Court while granting bail. As per the condition, Walikar has to present himself every day for two hours before the Lokayukta Police for inquiry till November 17.

Judge Ballolli had refused bail to Walikar earlier. However, he had secured conditional bail from the High Court Bench in Dharwad on November 3.
