BENGALURU:  Attributing caste system to the economic, social and educational inequalities in society, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday regretted that there were consistent efforts from the ‘upper’ castes to protect caste system for their political and economic interests.

“Efforts being made by social reformers such as Basavanna and B.R. Ambedkar and Kanakadasa to eliminate caste system failed to yield results. It has become a practice to attribute caste for every political incident,” he observed.

Conferring the Kanakashree Award to Chairman of Purandara Study Centre, A.V. Navada, Mr. Siddaramaiah assured the audience of examining the proposal to install a statue of Kanakadasa on the premises of Ravindra Kalakshetra.

He said Kanakadasa and Basavanna had tried their best to eliminate caste system through their works.
