Bangalore: Around 10 people had a narrow escape after a three-storey house sunk to its side and leaned over against the neighbouring building near Shankar Mutt in Basaveshwaranagar police limits on Thursday morning.

The impact resulted in the partial collapse of an adjacent building, too. According to the police, a few students and a couple of families were staying in the building.

Mayur, 8, and his mother Rajeshwari, who lived in the ground floor, suffered minor injuries when a few stones fell on them while they were rushing out of the house.

The fire and emergency personnel were alerted and the police also rushed to the spot and evacuated the residents to safety.

A fire department official said, “We are planning to demolish the building, but as it is leaning on another building, it is posing a danger and there is not much space between the two structures. The building might have sunk due to a weak foundation. The recent spell of heavy rains could have also been a cause.”A police officer said the building belonged to Surendra Kumar.

Owner blamed

Shankar Mutt ward Corporator M Shivaraju blamed the building owner for the incident. “About 20 days ago, the ceiling of the ground floor house was falling off. But the owner ignored it. The building is 35 years old.

Though it is a 30×40 site, a cellar has been constructed in the ground floor, paving the way for accidents. Half of the building has been demolished. It would be completely razed by 2 am. The debris will be cleared on Friday. We will think of compensation later,” the corporator said.

BBMP Joint Commissioner (West) Lakshminarasimaiah and ward engineers were present at the spot.
