Mangalore : Tobacco Intervention Initiative (TII) centre of A.J. Institute of Dental Sciences observed Doctors Day by launching ‘TII Campaigns for Tobacco Free Kids.’ A workshop was also conducted on ‘Training for Tobacco Cessation’ attended by 35 health professionals.
Dr Vijaya Hegde, head, Department of Public Health Dentistry, A.J. Institute of Dental Sciences, welcomed the gathering. Thulasi Maddineni, chief executive officer Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayath inaugurated the programme and also addressed the gathering.
A.J. Shetty, managing director and Prashanth Shetty, vice president, Laxmi Memorial Education Trust were the Guests of Honor. Dr B. Sureshchandra, dean and director and Dr Bharath Shetty, vice principal, A.J. Institute of Dental Sciences were present.
C.K Manjunath, principal, Yenepoya School commended the efforts of TII centre and said that his institution was glad to be a part of this programme.
The Resource Persons for the Training Programme were Dr B. Unnikrishnan -professor and head, Dr Prasanna Mitra, associate professor, Dr Rekha T, associate professor from department of Community Medicine, KMC, Mangalore.
Dr Rajani George, assistant professor, Department of Public Health Dentistry, A.J Institute of Dental Sciences, delivered the vote of thanks.
As a part of the campaign a pilot program will be launched in three private Schools of Mangalore namely Cambridge, Yenepoya and Lourdes Central School. School Teachers and School Children will be trained in tobacco control activities to make their school and its environment Tobacco Free.
The main aim is to discourage the children in developing the habit. Program evaluation will be carried out and various intra and inter-school competitions will be conducted.
