Mangalore University: Prof K Byrappa as new Vice Chancellor

Mangalore, Jun 5: Prof K Byrappa has been appointed as the new vice chancellor of Mangalore University on Wednesday. Byrappa will assume charge at Mangalagangotri at 10.30 a.m. on Thursday. Mr. Byrappa will be the eighth Vice-Chancellor of the 33-year-old Mangalore University.

Prof Byrappa specializes in nanotechnology, nonmaterial and materials science. He has published eight books and contributed a number of research articles for various journals.

A senior professor in the University of Mysore and a native of Mysore, Byrappa obtained his BSc (1973) and MSc (1975) from the University of Mysore and his PhD (1981) from Moscow State University in Russia.

In 2011, he received the Dr. Raja Ramanna Award for Science and Technology from the State government. He has delivered special lectures and course lectures in various countries like Spain, Japan, the U.S., the Netherlands, Poland, Italy and South Korea.

Though Prof Niranjan (University of Mysore) and Prof Chinnappa Gowda (University of Mangalore) too were strong contenders for the post, Byrappa was ultimately selected for the post.
