Mangalore, May 30: KMC Hospital Attavar, to mark World No Tobacco Day, will observe a week long free screening camp for the people who are victims of tobacco consumption.
Smoking tobacco damages nearly every organ in the human body & it is one of the strongest cancer-causing agents. Cigarette smoking accounts for at least 30% of all cancer deaths. Tobacco use is associated with at least 15 different types of cancers, including cancers of the throat, mouth, lungs pancreas, kidney, bladder, and cervix.
People who smoke are up to six times more likely to suffer a heart attack than nonsmokers, and the risk increases with the number of cigarettes smoked. Smoking also causes most cases of chronic obstructive lung disease, Strokes and also ulcers in stomach.
Dr Suja Shreedharan, ENT stated that “We can almost always find some visible abnormality in patients that smoke and often in those exposed to second hand smoke. Children have increased risk of ear disease and airway troubles when their parents smoke. The major risk factor for the majority of head and neck cancers is clearly due to smoking or oral tobacco use.”
“KMC Hospital aims to help tobacco consumers by offering them free consultation services from the department of Psychiatry, ENT, Pulmonary Medicine and Oncology from 31st May to 5th June 2014 between 9 am to 4:00 pm. The patients under this camp can avail certain benefits on investigations to rule out the hazards of consuming tobacco,” said Dr. Madhusudan Upadya, Medical Superintendent.
Benefits of the camp are Free consultation, 20% discount will be offered on Radiology Investigations, PFT, Video laryngoscope (Video laryngoscope is done to examine the larynx which will identify any disease in the upper airway which could be caused by smoking) and 10% discount will be offered on Laboratory test & Medicines, it was mentioned.
