Waves at Ullal beach pull in five, one dead, another missing and three rescued

Mangalore, May 21: Four families from Andhra Pradesh went for outing on the beach, but it soon turned tragic when the waves pulled in five persons. A woman in the group died and a youngster went missing. The incident occurred at Mogaveerpatna beach in Ullal here on Wednesday May 21.

Mehrunnisa (60), is the deceased person, she was a resident of Madhavaram in Kadapa district, Andhra Pradesh. Mushtaque (14) was washed away by waves and is feared drowned, his body is not found and the search is still on.

The other three, namely Ghausunnisa (30), Shakila Banu (34), and Munni (20) were rescued. Munni was discharged from hospital after first aid while the other two have been admitted.

On Wednesday, over 25 persons from four families hailing from Andhra’s Kadapa district came in three vehicles to visit Ullal Dargah. After offering prayers at the Dargah, they went to the beach at Mogaveerpatna. While they were near the water, a huge wave swept over them and pulled in five people. On hearing the screams of other persons in group, the locals along with Aaron, an Australian, rushed to the spot and succeeded in bring four persons ashore. Of the four persons brought to safety, Mehrunnisa who was in a critical condition failed to respond to treatment and breathed her last.

MLA of Ullal and Health minister U T Khadar visited the spot and took stock of the situation.
