Election betting: two arrested, Rs 8 lakh seized

Kundapur, May 17: Two persons were arrested by the police on Saturday May 17. The accused were indulged in an illegal betting activity at Rattadi in Jaddinagadde, Amasebail. The police also seized Rs 8 lac in cash from the accused.

Sadananda Shetty (38), a resident of Rattadi, and Ashok Bhat (38), a resident of Amasebail Mavinakadu have been arrested.

It is said that when counting for Lok Sabha elections was in progress on Friday May 16, Sadananda Shetty, Ramanna Shetty, Chandra Shetty and Prakash Hegde had placed bets of Rs 1 lakh each (total Rs 4 lac) in favour of BJP candidate Shobha Karandlaje, against Ashok Bhat who placed his bet on Congress candidate Jayaprakash Hegde.

As J P Hegde lost and Shobha won, he had to pay Rs 4 lakh. Sadananda Shetty and Ashok Bhat had put Rs 8 lakh in a sack and reportedly did the transaction at Nandikona bus stop of Rattadi.

As soon as the police received information about the betting, under the directions of SP Dr Boralingaiah, and under the guidance of DySP C B Patil, Amasebail police sub inspector Nasir Hussain and team raided the spot. They arrested the two who had indulged in betting and seized eighty bundles of Rs 100 notes, each bundle containing 100 notes.

The two were produced in Kundapur court and released on bail. A case has been booked under sections 87 of IPC.

Police officials Jayaprakash, Mahabala, Siddappa, Krishna, Shantaram, Ullas and driver Anand participated in the operation.
