Mangalore : The Syndicate of Mangalore University, has decided to hold an inquiry into the functioning of the Department of English on the university campus at Mangalagangotri for the past five years, according to sources.

The decision was taken at the meeting of the Syndicate at Madikeri on April 10 after some members alleged that the pass percentage of students at the department was unusually low in five years and not many candidates have come forward for enrolling for the research (Ph.D.).

Allegations

The members told the meeting that there were allegations that students were either being given low marks intentionally or failed. If the students scored below 55 per cent marks they lose eligibility to serve as teachers in any college. Sources said that after a detailed discussion the Syndicate constituted a sub-committee headed by M. K. Vijay Kumar, advocate and a member of the Syndicate. Hampa Nagarajaiah and P. Sripati Tantri, members of the Syndicate, are other members of the panel. The meeting also decided to nominate a subject expert to the committee.
