Writer Vivek Shanbagh inaugurates “Kavitha Fest”

Mangalore, Jan 13, 2014: A poet has the freedom  to express himself and his experiences while penning down poems. At the same time  he should never forget his responsibilities towards the society, said noted writer Vivek Shanbagh.

He was speaking on the topic ‘Poetry and Freedom of Expression’ after inaugurating  Kavitha Fest  at the  Town Hall in Mangalore on January 12  on behalf of Kavitha Trust and Konkani Bhas Ani Pratishtan.

Continuing, he said poetry is a powerful medium of Freedom of Expression. Poetry also plays an important role in bringing about reforms or revolution. At the same time poets cannot write  just anything merely because they have freedom of expression,  Shanbagh said.

Rahamath Tarikere, noted critic,  Basti Vaman Shenoy, President of the  Pratishtan, Melwyn Rodrigues, President of Kavitha Trust, Kishu Barkur, Secretary, Eric Soans Vittori Karkal, Kavitha Trust Vice President Avarel Rodrigues and others were present.

Poetry recitation contest : The final rounds of the Third All India Poetry  Recitation contest (Rohan and Lavita Monteiro sponsored) was held on the occasion. A total of 32 poets participated. A multi-lingual  poets meet was also held, Sanjeev Varnekar presided over the meet. The Mathias Family Kavitha Award 2013 was presented to Yusuf Abdulla Sheikh on the occasion.

“Anjurache Paan’ an anthology of poems authored by Andrew L D’Cunha and  ‘Chapo’ by Nayana Adarkar were released on the occasion.
