Kumari Padma Bhapat, daughter of Sudhakar, a resident of Vanivada of Devagada taluk at Sindudurga district in Maharashtra was engaged to  Sriram, hailing from Mangalore  on November 27, 2013.

But brides’ relatives Prashanth Godse and Pramod Khelkar, who used to stay in grooms house located at Ballal Bagh have blackmailed him and took the amount of Rs Rs 6.5 lakh from him. The groom has acted as per their indication and remitted the amount in their bank account.

Later, the bride’s relatives allegedly demanded another Rs 20 lakh from him, but when he refused to pay, they kidnapped the bride.

Such kind of practice is commonly seen among Brahmin community, where the bride is shown to several men and demand money after the proposal is fixed, stated groom in his complaint lodged to the court.

Mangalore’s JMFC court has issued a search warrant for the bride and the complainant has announced a suitable reward for those who can search and hand over the bride to the department.
