Bantwal, Dec 27: Varanasi Subraya Bhat (87), founder president of Central Arecanut and Cocoa Marketing and Processing Cooperative Ltd. (CAMPCO) passed away due to age related ailment at his residence in Adyanadka in Bantwal taluk on December 27, Friday.

Mr Bhat had Campco factory in 1973 at Puttur and has served as the cooperative leader. The Campco’s chocolate factory at Puttur was only one in South India and second in the country in the cooperative sector.

With the financial support from the central and State governments, the Campco set up the chocolate factory for creating market for cocoa, which was inaugurated by the then President of India Giani Zail Singh on September 1, 1986.

Bhat is survived by two sons and two daughters.

Many social and political leaders have condoled the death of Mr Bhat.
