Mangalore, Dec. 18: The silver medal winners of St Agnes Special School, Bendur who participated in the Special Olympics Asia Pacific (SOAP) Regional Games, in the Cricket match held at Sydney, were given a stirring welcome at the KSRTC Bus stand here on December 18.
Danan Saldanha and Moideen Thazman are the students who represented the Indian cricket team. Physical Education Instructor Narayan Sherigar accompanied them as coach.
Speaking to the media Narayan said that the Special Olympics Asia Pacific (SOAP) Regional Games were held from November 26 to 8 December, where we had participated in Cricket representing the Indian cricket team and have succeeded to getting the second place. It is a great achievement for the specially abled children. But it is sad that we did not get any financial support from the government.
He further said that we have spent our own money and participated in the games. Moideen Thazman got the best bowler award while Danan Saldanha got best batsman award he added.
MLA J R Lobo speaking on the occasion said that St Agnes Special School Mangalore is one of the pioneering school in Mangalore catering to the needs of the specially abled children. Its happy to see the students of this school represented India in the Special Olympics and have won the second place in cricket.
MLA J R Lobo felicitated Danan and Moideen Thazman with garlands. Later the winners were taken on a procession from KSRTC to the St Agnes Special school grounds.
Deputy Commissioner MCC Gokuldas, Sr Maria Shruthi-Principal of St Agnes Special School, Joint Secretary Sr Olivia, and others were also present.
