Mangalore, Dec 16: Demanding to withdrawal of the ‘Union Government’s decision of banning arecanut, the members of Dakshina Kannada unit of Karnataka Prantha Raitha Sangha (KPRS) staged a protest by blocking the road at Rao and Rao Circle h0ere on Monday, Dec. 16.

Addressing the protesters District Secretary of KPRS Yadhav Shetty said that scientific research has proved that areca is not injurious to health. But, the Ministry of Health, in a report submitted to Supreme Court recently with regard to a case on banning gutkha, said that arecanut is injurious to health. This will affect the farmers an also the economics of the country he added.

Vasudeva Ucchil said that consumption of arecanut laced with tobacco is known to be injurious to health. He also aguishly said that if the government did not give up proposal the raitha sangha will stages massive protest all over the state he said.

The leader of Raita Sangha Vasudev Ucchil, Nonayya Gowda and others were present at the protest.
