President gives prestigious award to Mangalore University

Mangalore, Nov. 19: President Pranab Mukherjee today presented the prestigious Indira Gandhi National Service Scheme Best University Award, 2012-13 to Mangalore University, Karnataka at a function in Rashtrapati Bhawan here.

On the occasion of Indira Gandhi’s 96th birth anniversary, Mukherjee also gave NSS Best Plus 2 Council Award for 2012-13 to Directorate of Higher Secondary Education, Thiruvananthpuram while Upcoming University Award was presneted to Kumaun University, Nainital.

The awards are given to educational institutions, faculty and students for their contribution in various beneficial activities like planting of saplings, holding blood donation and pulse polio camps, and creating durable assets including helping in building of houses for the marginalised sections, for community benefit.

Seven Letters of Appreciation to NSS Programme Coordinators in various universities, ten awards to NSS Programme Officers and volunteer awards to 30 students from across the country were also given by Mukherjee on the occasion.

While Mangalore university was awarded with NSS’s an excellent University prashasthi for the year 2012-2013, Dr.Gananatha Yekkar was bestowed with most popular Indira Gandhi NSS national award by the president of India Pranab Mukherji.At the same time chancellor T.C.Shivashankara Murthy has been felicitated with popular ‘Vishwavidhyanilaya Pashasthi’.During the occasion union minister for youth welfare and sports affairs Jithendra Singh and others were present.

Earlier to this Dr.Yekkar has received best ‘Yojanaadhikari Prashasthi’ for the year 1997-98. In 2010-2011 Mangalore university’s most popular ‘Vishvavidhyanilaya, states most excellent “Sanyojanadhikari’state award was received by him. For the last 25 years, he was being served in NSS in different capacities in executive committee. Currently he is working in government first grade college, Tenkanidiyur as head of the department in Kannada post graduation division.

Dr.Yekkar, a folk scholar has penned downed 10 books and received PhD degree from Mangalore University for his research in Tulunadu’s folk games.Hr has participated in international, national level seminars, in camps as an administrator, as human resource director. Also he also received from Mumbai University Dr.Varadaraja Aadya gold medal, from Karnataka Tulu Sahitya academy Pusthaka Puraskara, from Mangalore University silver Jubilee Puraskar and from Dr.Govinda Pai research centre Adhyayana fellowship.

He has also served as member of Tulu Sahitya academy. In Kaanthavara he worked as director of Allamaprabhu Peeta, Kemmale folk publishing, Rashi Publishing and was the president of Doddanna Shetty cultural foundation.
