MANGALORE: Apr 4, 2013; Vijay G Joshi on Thursday took charge as the first director (refinery) of Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd, an ONGC group company. He will be the second functional director on board of MRPL. Vijay Joshi, 58, brings to the table 36 years of experience in petroleum refining industry. Before this appointment he was group general manager (projects in-charge) of MRPL, directly responsible for all project related activities.
Known for his leadership skills and inclusive style of management, Vijay hails from Bijapur district, Karnataka, and is a product of 1975 batch of NITK, Suratkal. His strategic and visionary thinking and hands-on style of management saw him set up the engineering and documentation departments in MRPL and subsequently without any project management consultant, led his team to build and commission ISOM and mixed xylene units.
Having played a key role in phase I, II – the earlier refining units of MRPL concept to commissioning, Vijay was handpicked to lead the phase III concept to commissioning team. It may be recalled that MRPL had undertaken an ambitious expansion project – phase III in 2006 strategically designed to deliver multiple benefits ranging from maximisation of light and middle distillate yield and production of BS III & IV compliant autofuels.
Phase III also will produce more value added products like propylene with conversion facility to polypropylene to capacity increase by 3 MMTPA and capability to process opportunity crudes that are high tan, acidic and heavy. The crude distillation unit and vacuum distillation units of the Phase III, project estimated at approximately Rs 14,000 crore was commissioned in 2012 and by this year-end all ancillary units are also expected to go online.
