Mangalore, July 10: Close on the heels of incident of cattle being trafficking reported from Gangolli, yet another case of alleged cattle being smuggling has been reported at Gurupur Bridge, outskirt of Mangalore on July 10, Wednesday at around 6.30 am.
In the incident, it was reported that Mangalore rural police were on their routine check, when a Mahindra pickup with 19 cattle, without number plate was passing. On suspicion, the police as a practice of their duty signaled the vehicle driver to stop but ignoring police signal, in order to escape from the hands of police, driver of the pickup drove the vehicle in reverse direction.
While police were chasing the pickup for short distance, another vehicle came on to the bride and the driver of the pickup could not drive any further and was constrained to stop. The three persons inside, got out of the pickup and managed to flee from the scene, before the police could catch them.
After the persons escaped, the police inspected the pickup vehicle and found 19 cows and calves inside. The seized the vehicle and the animals were taken to the police station.
Out of the 19, four animals died soon after due to suffocation as a result of cramping, sources said.
