Mangalore Customs officials seized gold worth Rs 24 lakhs concealed speaker

Mangaluru, Nov 9: The officers of customs, Mangaluru International Airport have seized 0.93 kg of gold in the form of one cylindrical rod shaped object valued at Rs 24.25 lakhs from a passenger who arrived from Dubai.

One ‘Premium’ brand speaker which was brought by the said passenger who arrived by Air India Express flight IX384 from Dubai on November 3. The passenger, whose name has not been revealed, was detained by the customs for futher Examination.

The speaker under detention was then subjected to detailed open examination on 7th November, and gold in the form of a small cylindrical rod, which was ingeniously concealed in the inner core portion of the speaker, was retrieved with the help of technically qualified persons.

On interrogation, the passenger deposed that he had intentionally concealed the gold to avoid detection by the customs and to evade payment of appropriate customs duties. The gold, weighing 0.93 kg, valued at Rs 24.25 lakhs was seized.

The passenger was arrested and prodcued before the principal civil judge, who remanded him to judicial custody for 14 days.

Further investigation is under progress.
