Upgradation of Mangaluru International Airport.

Mangaluru, October 30: MIA director JT Radhakrishna in a press meet held at Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) informed that MIA will get a new control tower, a parallel taxi way and a primary radar very soon.

Radhakrishna said that the setting up of the new radar will help in safe take-off and landing of airplanes even during bad weather. The airport has already procured the equipment. The installation work will commence in the New Year in a separate building.

Currently, there are six parking bases at the airport. Work to construct three more will be completed by June -2016. Two additional parallel taxiways will be constructed by March-2016 which helps in operation of more flights. By January, the work on the exit road too will be completed.

Air traffic has increased by 20 per cent in the last six months. A total of 13 lakhs passengers travelled during this period. The airport has begun to operate a new daily flight of Jet Airways to New Delhi at 7.30 am from October 25th. The passenger traffic is expected to cross 15 lakhs this year. The runway extension will be done subject to the procurement of land. In this regard help is sought from the state government. A request has also been made to the government to develop the road from the Konkan railway bridge till Maravoor.

MIA receives Award:

Radhakrishna informed that Mangaluru International Airport was awarded the World Quality Commitment (WQC) award at Paris, France and he has received the award on October 25th. The Business Initiative Directions (BID) presented the awards and the criteria of quality, leadership and excellence were taken into consideration. Based on the data provided by the Airport Council, the BID has recognized the airport, and has presented the award based on the Total Quality Management model QC 100 of the airport, he said.

During the last year, the customer satisfaction index has improved from 4.35 to 4.82 and also the airport has been given 4.92 points out of 5 in cleanliness, informed Director Radhakrishna.
