Campaign to ban smoking in public places, strict measures to implement COTPA act: SP Dr S D Sharanappa.

Mangaluru, August 29: Suitable measures have been initiated for the strict implementation of COTPA act in the Dakshina Kannada district police station jurisdiction. Over a span of last two months, 1,837 cases have been registered and fine of Rs 3,28,870 has been collected, informed the Dakshina Kannada Superintendent of police Dr S D Sharanappa.

Addressing a press meet at his office here on Friday, SP Dr Sharanappa said, under various sections of COTPA act, 659 cases were registered under the DK police jurisdiction in 2013 and fine of Rs 57,000 was collected; in 2014- 246 cases were registered, fine Rs 41,500 was collected and from 2015 to till now 1,991 cases were registered, fine of Rs 3,48,870 was collected, informed the SP.

With a view to ban smoking and tobacco consumption in public places under the DK district police jurisdiction, a campaign has been undertaken from July 1st to August 28th. By this, attempt will be made to keep the young generation away from hallucinogens, he said.

Case will be registered and fine will be imposed against those who smoke in public places such as office, parks, cinema halls, bus stand, railway station and other public places. Along with this, the consumption of gutka and other tobacco products will be strictly controlled. In the 100 metres range of schools and colleges, caution boards depicting Smoking banned area will be erected and the sale of cigarettes and tobacco products will be banned in these areas, informed SP Dr S D Sharanappa.

Nodal officer from public health department who reviews the implementation of the COTPA act, who was also present at the press meet said, the COTPA act is fully implemented in Gadag, Kolar and Chickamagalur district police station jurisdiction.

In DK district police station jurisdiction too, campaign to enact COTPA act has been appropriately done since the past two months.  Based on 80 percent of law implementation and creating 80 percent awareness among the public, it will be declared that the COTPA act is completely implemented in the district. In the rural areas of DK district, the act is strictly implemented, he informed.

Additional Superintendent of Police, Vincent Shanta Kumar was also present during the press meet.
