Mangaluru listed among 6 Smart Cities of the state.

Mangaluru, August 28: Mangaluru is one among the six cities of Karnataka chosen for the Smart City project among the 98 cities selected by the central government. This is a five years project and now in the first phase, 20 cities will be selected based on the detailed project reports of Infrastructure Development Corporation chosen by the Ministry of Urban Development, Government of India.

Continuous drinking water, power supply, sanitation and solid waste management, efficient urban transport system, providing housing to poor people at lower prices, the implementation of information technology, e-governance and safety of senior citizens’, health and education, are the main objectives of the Smart City.

There are prospects of Mangaluru city being chosen among the 20 cities being chosen for the project in the first phase.

The possibilities of Mangaluru being selected for the project in the first phase is clear as the city is developing into sports city, healthy city, cyber city, knowledge city and connected widely by water, air and land routes. New Mangalore Port, International Airport, network of three railway divisions such as Mysuru, Palghat and Konkan Railway, link of four highways, beautiful beaches are the plus points for Mangaluru.

The State government had proposed to the Central Government, the six cities of the state including Mangaluru city choosing them under the 13 regulations to be upgraded as smart city. It has to be noted that pertained to the Smart City selection procedure, Mangaluru City had secured 96.88 points rising to the maximum score.

Reducing traffic congestion in the city, well-developed urban transport development, parks and playgrounds development, various measures for pollution control and other criteria were considered for the selection in the first phase and points were given. Now based on the DPR report, the cities which are going to be selected for Smart City project, have to execute the proposed development plans in Smart city through the supervision of SPV(Special Purpose Vehicle) Committee.  For this in the first year, Rs 200 crore, and in the next 3 years, yearly Rs. 100 crore, owing to Rs 300 crore, in total, 500 crore will be released to the city.
